Some distinctive features of Rozan's activities are: - Violence, adolescents' sexual health and gender stereotyping are viewed in the overall context of emotional health . This wider context is seen as a more comprehensive and holistic framework to address these issues. For example, Rozan's children's program, Aangan, addresses the issue of child sexual abuse by not only providing awareness to children about protection, but also by working with the children on communication skills and self-esteem enhancement since these skills are seen as core elements in any prevention strategy.
- The blend of emotional health, gender, and self-growth into mainstream development work is unique to Rozan and has been appreciated and acknowledged by a number of organizations and professionals from such fields as reproductive health, education, action research organizations, police, medical colleges, and community based service delivery organizations.
- More specifically, the core aspect of all Rozan trainings is the incorporation of self-awareness . While a number of organizations conduct trainings on gender & development and sensitization to violence, they often do not address the personal blocks and attitudes towards gender and violence. Rozan realizes that it is very important to understand and then work on the obstacles coming from within ourselves.
- Another important aspect of Rozan activities is addressing the strategic interests of both women and men without losing focus of practical needs of individuals . Rozan feels that both kinds of needs are important and must be addressed. For instance, providing counseling to women and children in distress addresses a practical need, while at the same time empowering them through life skills ensures that strategic needs are addressed as well. In gender trainings Rozan meets the specific requirement of the organization for gender sensitive activities, while at the same time it builds capacity of the organization and its staff to address inequitable distribution of power in the organization and community.
- Rozan acknowledges that the issues that we work on are sensitive and challenge deeply ingrained core values and systems . While recognizing that these core values and systems need to be challenged and changed, Rozan also strongly believes that when we do this, our approach must necessarily be sensitive and respectful of other points of view different from our own. Rozan is conscious of the negative impact of a hastily and insensitively designed community campaign aiming to raise awareness on violence against women and children and sexual & reproductive health of youth, but instead creating a feeling of discomfort, fear and uncertainty amongst communities.
- Involving men as active partners has always been an essential thrust of Rozan's outreach . Men have an equal role to play in this change, not just in their role as supporters but as active partners, because these interventions ultimately affect men, be it in the challenging of power structures, or the role of fathers as protectors of children against child sexual abuse, or the role of non-violent men in raising consciousness on violence against women.
- Rozan understands that interaction and collaboration between NGOs and other core groups and individuals is essential for the cause. And that active and mutually beneficial collaboration with other organizations working on similar issues is very important. This helps in sharing experiences, learning lessons, and building alliances, all of which are crucial for lobbying and influencing policies.
